You might be thinking…weird photo for a photographer to put up… it’s not anything special or interesting to look at.  But today as I’m packing up my house (oh yeah … we sold our house and move out the end of March!)  I keep seeing this rock… a symbol of how much stuff we have!  I may be a bit of a hoarder … I like to think I’m just sentimental!

I don’t think we realize how much stuff we have as Americans until we are forced to move all of our “stuff” from one location to another.  You see this rock isn’t anything special except that I found it at the beach once and liked the colour and how smooth it was.  I need to get back to packing but I just thought I would let you know what I’ve been up to on this lovely march break.

Auto Mode (Green Image):

Tells the camera to use it’s best judgement to select shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance, focus and flash to take the best shot that it can.

Shutter Priority Mode (S or TV):

You choose the shutter and the camera chooses the other settings (aperture, white balance, ISO, etc) so as to ensure you have a well balanced exposure

Aperture Priority Mode (A or AV):

Aperture priority is very similar to shutter priority mode but is the mode where you select the aperture and the camera then chooses all of the other settings

Manual Mode (M):

In this mode you have full control over your camera and need to think about all settings including shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance, flash

I was asked to teach a workshop at one of Sarnia’s local high schools.  We had a lot of fun learning about taking good photos and how the camera works.  It got me thinking, a lot of my friends and family have DSLR’s  and don’t really know all they can do with their camera so I thought I would start sharing some tips and tricks for you guys.  This is a basic rule in photography and in almost every intro to photography course you will learn this.  I will be post some more soon so keep checking back for blog updates!

The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts.  With this grid in mind the ‘rule of thirds’ now identifies four important parts of the image that you should consider placing points of interest in as you frame your image.

 

 

Studies have shown that when viewing images that people’s eyes usually go to one of the intersection points most naturally rather than the center of the shot.  Using the rule of thirds works with this natural way of viewing an image.

 

I took this shot at Marine Land a couple of years ago … this is the same image just cropped differently.  Let me know what you think?  Which seems more appealing and where does your eye go in each image?  This will help when framing a shot and when you don’t know where to place the subject.  Try placing the subject (point of interest) in one of the four intersecting spots.  Practice, Practice, Practice … will be a reoccurring theme with these tips and tricks posts!

When Lindsay and Ethan look back years from now they will remember Pearson crawling around….opening every drawer he can reach and sticking cue-tips in his mouth.  They will remember his gibberish talking, his love for candy canes, and how when outside he would go straight for the dirt!   Thanks for letting me come in and take photos of a typical Saturday afternoon.

Sorry for the lack of posts in 2012,  January just seemed to fly by.  As many of you know we put our house up for sale and I’ve been busy working around here…who knew it would be so much work selling your house!  But I have lots of posts coming so don’t worry!  2011 was amazing I loved all the weddings I shot and got to attend!  Here are few of my favorite photos from the year, I had so many more favorites but after looking through thousands of photos these were the images that brought back wonderful memories!  This is what photography truly is to me, bringing back the emotion from that day.  I had so many creative brides and I am looking forward to my 2012 weddings!

Congratulations on the engagement and here’s to what’s to come!

Nothing crazy out of the ordinary happened yesterday.  But it just happened to be the anniversary of our wedding day!  So Chad and I hung out together to celebrate.

Here’s a little break down of why I love Chad and a synopsis of our evening:

-He takes me to places even if he knows he’s not going to eat 80% of what’s on the (all you can eat) menu

-When we are shopping he sits and waits for me

-Never complains about what I do end up buying … and usually encourages my buyings.

-Lets me drink hot apple cider in the car even though the smell as he puts it “makes him cringe” (after dozens of times getting it…who knew)

-Gets pulled over by the cops just because he “knew he could get them to pull him over!”…Why you might ask…driving to SLOW!

Three years ago this adventure began….and what an adventure it is.
