Hey Everyone … I just wanted to share a little bit of what I’ve been up to around here! I was asked to teach a workshop at one of Sarnia’s local high schools.  We had a lot of fun learning about taking good photos and how the camera works.  It got me thinking, a lot of my friends and family have DSLR’s  and don’t really know all they can do with their camera so I thought I would start sharing some tips and tricks for you guys.  This is a basic rule in photography and in almost every intro to photography course you will learn this.  I will be post some more soon so keep checking back for blog updates!

The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts.  With this grid in mind the ‘rule of thirds’ now identifies four important parts of the image that you should consider placing points of interest in as you frame your image.

Studies have shown that when viewing images that people’s eyes usually go to one of the intersection points most naturally rather than the center of the shot.  Using the rule of thirds works with this natural way of viewing an image.

I took this shot at Marine Land a couple of years ago … this is the same image just cropped differently.  Let me know what you think?  Which seems more appealing and where does your eye go in each image?  This will help when framing a shot and when you don’t know where to place the subject.  Try placing the subject (point of interest) in one of the four intersecting spots.  Practice, Practice, Practice … will be a reoccurring theme with these tips and tricks posts!

For more help go here and you will learn everything you need to know about photography … otherwise I will be posting more updates on important photography skills soon !

I love these two dearly… so when Shekanah and Mike asked me to take their engagement and wedding photos … I was so very excited!  These two have been doing the long distance thing for a while now, so not only will there be a wedding in July they will finally get to see each other everyday!  But this also means Shekanah will be moving away … as she will be moving to Jackson, Michigan.  But we will definitely have to go visit … and she has agreed to come back Sarnia to visit too!

Sorry for the delay with these … we’ve been a little busy around here, blog post to follow.

Hope everyone is having a lovely Valentine’s Day!
